Hello!

P-P-P-Pick up a penguin!

penguins!

Hi! I'm Matthew Vernon, the sysadmin of the Pick Empire. Below you'll find my CV, links to a selection of the other websites I run, some information on my interests, and a link or two. In addition, there's the guestbook I wrote in an odd minute - you can view it here, or better still sign it.

Curriculum Vitae

I have a fairly up-to-date (January 2006) CV online, as a PDF document here.

Websites I run

These are less numerous than they used to be, so I've included here some that I wrote or substantially re-wrote some time ago, and have since been taken over by other people.

The Easy Guide to installing Hurd on a Linux box
This was probably the canonical installation guide for the GNU/Hurd operating system. It now remains as a curiosity (and because I think it's a good example of how to write an installation guide!)
The uk.games.roleplay FAQ
I maintain this FAQ currently.
CUSFS
The University Science Fiction Society. I'm one of a number of over-worked webmasters who look after this site.
The Cambridge Tolkien Society
I used to run this society, and re-wrote the web pages a in 1997. Peter Corbett now looks after them.
CSSWG
Cambridge Students' Science Week Group. I wrote this site originally, but have passed it on. I'm still involved in Crash, Bang, Squelch! though.
MethSoc
Not one of my sites at all, but it's hosted by the Pick Empire.

The Pick Empire

The Pick Empire is the collection of people and machines (and a house) that has sprung forth from the original pick.sel.cam.ac.uk, which was an old 386 I borrowed from College and installed Linux onto as an easier alternative to trying to get DOS network drivers working on its iffy network card. Pick itself has gone through two re-incarnations and is still the principle server, though www.pick.ucam.org (the webserver CNAME) often points to other machines. The only Pick Empire machine within Selwyn is rapun.sel.cam.ac.uk (though isengard.sel.cam.ac.uk is an ex-Imperial). The Pick Empire also plays host to 2 usenet FAQs, and Cambridge MethSoc's pages. Oh, and the name "Empire" shouldn't be taken too seriously...

Links

I really should increase the number of links here; my bookmarks file has 145 lines to it, however, so extracting those which may be of interest to the world at large rather than simply to myself may take some time...

Peru
This is the page about Peru, a Free web-browser that I'm working on at the moment. The page above is rather sketchy, but gives some idea of the current status of the project.
http://bahn.hafas.de/english.html
A considerably better timetable query system than Railtrack's, and covers most of Europe.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/
Medline - A biological literature search engine.

Interests

I have a fair number of interests, and some time soon I'll write more about them. They include trampolining, ringing, coding, walking/climbing, cycling, music, Tolkien, Science Fiction, Fantasy Literature, roleplaying, Ancient Languages and a bit of Christian Theology. The WFRP campaign I ran in 1997-98 still has a couple of pages on here - Information about the characters, etc. and the campaign journal.
